He drew Mickey almost single-handedly, then spent decades in a workshop inventing the machines that let live action and animation share a frame — the rare artist who got bored of drawing and reinvented the camera. Animated the first Mickey Mouse cartoons and later engineered the optical printing and effects techniques that transformed film compositing.
