Our Take
Agora Cosmica started with a question that changed everything. Three years ago, the founder was on a walk and asked a chatbot to interpret the cave dream from Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" through the lens of C.G. Jung—got a perspective they'd never considered. But when it came to their own dreams, the big AI providers' policies felt fundamentally wrong for something so personal. Zero data retention wasn't an option. So they built Agora Cosmica from scratch, turned it into a German nonprofit, and just published everything under AGPL-3.0 last month.
It's a living library you can talk to—30 historical figures from philosophy, science, art, mysticism, and activism, ready to have real conversations with you. You can chat with individual figures, bring them together in multi-figure councils for dialogues, or just explore their stories. It's BYOK (bring your own key), self-hostable, and does zero behavioral tracking. Your conversations stay yours. The code is open source, the nonprofit structure keeps it honest, and anyone can run it themselves.
This is what happens when a founder actually uses the product and finds it lacking. Not a pitch deck, not a growth hack—a tool someone built because nothing else respected what mattered. Agora Cosmica proves you can build educational AI that's actually private, actually nonprofit, and actually open. The founders didn't ask permission. They just built it.
